iPod nano Toilet Edition
Earlier tonight I was changing the water in my fish tank, and as I normally do, I was listening to some tunes on my iPod while doing the maintenance. I was wearing gym shorts and had the iPod in the back pocket, with the Apple earbuds running up my back and going into my ears from the back, so that they would not interfere if they were in the front. I’ve done this many times before without issue.
After finishing up the tank maintenance and putting everything away, I went into the bathroom to wash my hands. While I was bending over the sink washing the soap off my hands, the following event happened in a flash:
I felt a tug at my ear, the music stopped playing, I heard a ding, then a splash. I quickly looked over at the toilet next to the sink, my heart sunk, and several explitives unconsciously lept out of my mouth, for there, lying deep in the toilet, was my five week old white iPod nano.
I thought about reaching in pulling the iPod out, but my phobia of electriticy took over. My mind must have said, “Wait! iPod has a battery, battery has electrical charge, water is good conductor of said electrical charge, DON’T TOUCH IT!!!” Because with my luck, I would get electrocuted and it would be all over the news. “Moron gets electrocuted by his iPod. Story at eleven!” would be the TV teasers. “iIdiot gets iKilled by iToilet” would be the Daily News headline, while the Post would just have the one word, “iDumbass”. It would be hell for my mother, because for the rest of her life, whenever she made dinner reservations, someone would recognize her last name and bring up the fact that her son was killed fishing an iPod out of a toilet. She would never live it down.
After about 30 seconds, the display flickered and went off. After a few more explitives, I realized that this was all the fault of two guys I work with. Earlier in the day, they were asking me about some of the boneheaded things I’ve done (like fall out of bed) and making fun of me. They jinxed me. They gave me bad karma. It was their fault and they were going to have to deal with my wrath. I took a few pics to remember this incident and rub it in their faces. It was during the photo shoot that I realized that the headphones did not completely fall into the toilet with the iPod, so I used the dry part to fish out the iPod, using toilet paper to actually grab hold of the soaked device (I figured that toilet paper couldn’t be a good conductor of electricity). I shook it off and laid it on the sink face up.
I’ve dropped electronic devices in water before, and I know that as long as it’s fresh water, and you let things dry out completely before trying to turn the device on again, it will sometimes work fine. With that in mind, the iPod has been placed in the kitchen near the window to try and help it dry out. Today is Tuesday. I figure four days is a good time frame to let it dry out. I’ll give it a try on Saturday to see if it can be salvaged or if it’s a total loss.

i dropped in tub. i felt so stupid, i haven’t even had for week yet. i didn’t feel like paying a hundred dollars for repairs, so i looked online. i advise not to open it, as it voids warranty, plus i get kinda freaked out being by electrical objects with an object that conducts electricity in hand. i just googled it, and found suggestions

I accidentally went swimming with my Nano. It was completely dead and water was dripping out of the USB port but 24 hours of drying out and then a recharge and all OK except some marks still on the screen
I just got mine under a week ago, i am 13 and i have been saving up for ages, my parents finally descided to get me one as a present, and i would put in my $200 which i had been saving for close to 6 months, but they would pay the $160 remaining,
so today i was told to wash the floors, and i did so.
I was listening to music while doing this and it fell out of my pocket into the tub of water/floor cleaning liquid.
I am devestated it was actually ment to be an early prestent for this saturday and i havent even used it out side the house, i have gotten a total of 1 hour of usage out of it and i am SO upset.
i jus droped myn in the bath now! i luv mi ipd so much i cannot live wivout it! n i reall hope it will work again! :(
Damn youre an idiot! Ipod has a battery of max 9 volts, these 9 volts from the tiny battery cannot even make you feel electricity. You should have taken the ipod out immediately, removed the battery and dissasembled and cleaned it afterwards. When battery is removed, electrolysis cannot damage the board of your ipod, but moist can and therefore it is neccessary to clean and dry the ipod as soon as possible. You probably have lost warranty anyway because of dropping the device into the water, so disassembling shouldnt be avoided (you can call the shop you bought the ipod from for details about warranty), but it should be done with great care (no scratching or breaking inside) or else you damage it.
My iPod went into the sink. Everything is working except for the charging process. It wouldn’t charge. Can anyone help me?
I received a nano from my boyfriend for my birthday and had a water bottle leak inside my purse. Now it isn’t working. I’ve put it in front of a heater, it still won’t turn on. Can anyone help me??

I dropped my 80gb ipod(1 month old) in bucket for few seconds, have tried 5 r’s, pulled damn thing apart, disconnected battery & HDD, and still nothing, cant get it to charge enough to do a reset. Puta wont recognise it and nither will lap top. Not getting any strange noises but do have sad ipod icon apart from ‘dropping’ it what else can i try????????

Not for the intellectually challenged… Next time when you drop a battery operated object into water (or the iToilet), remove it promptly, remove the battery and soak the device in rubbing alcohol (CAUTION: this stuff is very flammable!!!). After swishing it around in a shallow bowl filled with the alcohol, blow - don’t wipe! - the device off with compressed air (an “air duster” will also do well). Wiping may remove decals, silk screening, etc. This expedites drying by replacing the water with the rubbing alcohol and gives you the best chance of a full recovery. Furthermore, any residual alcohol stuck in the nooks and crannies will evaporate quicker.
I LEFT MY DAUGHTERS IPOD NANO IN MY POCKET AND THEN PUT IT IN THE WASHING MACHINE, I RELLY HOPE IT DRYS OUT AS IM ALWAYS TELLING HER TO LOOK AFTER HER STUFF AND NOW IVE GONE AND DONE THIS...... I FEEL SO SILLY
If you get electrical stuff wet THE best way to dry them is to pop them in a vacuum ASAP, the water will “boil” off and dry your gadget far more fully (think of making a cup of tea on everest) than any heating or rubbing in alcohol etc etc
Miles: Yes, that may be THE best way to dry them, but how many people have the equipment to make a good vacuum around their equipment. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have a bell jar lying around.
I guess you could put it into a plastic bag and use your vacuum cleaner to suck the air out, but I’m thinking that would just get the plastic bag clogged into your vacuum more than anything else.
The current conventional wisdom says that you should cover a wet electronic device in a bowl of uncooked rice, and the rice will absorb all the moisture from the device.
