Up for auction is a photograph of the iceberg that sank the Titanic.
Racing to the rescue as England’s pride and joy went down on her maiden voyage was the RMS Carpathia, which plucked 705 survivors from lifeboats and ferried them to the Titanic’s destination, the West Side of Manhattan.
It was on board the Carpathia that passenger Mabel Fenwick captured the floating ice mass that took down the great ship. The hull of one of the Titanic’s lifeboats can be seen in the top right corner of the historic image.
The auction is mostly postcards and newspapers related to Titanic, but this deck chair is pretty cool.
Christie’s has two interesting auctions coming up. The first is an original Apple-I computer, in original packaging, and is expected to sell for between $160,600 and $240,900.
The second is The Library of Edward Tufte which includes several rare books from the likes of Galileo, Picasso, Ernst, Newton, Descartes, and Euclid.
Update: The Apple computer sold for $210,000.
An original Darth Vader costume, most likely made for “The Empire Strikes Back”, is up for auction in London next month.
The jet-black helmet, mask and armor worn by the intergalactic villain are expected to sell for between 160,000 pounds and 230,000 pounds ($250,000 and $365,000) at a sale of pop culture memorabilia next month.
This would make a great Xmas gift for me. Just saying.
