Brooklyn Bridge
Tourists are just about the most annoying thing about growing up and living in NYC; so much so, that I try to steer clear of touristy spots most of the time. However, when I heard that the Brooklyn Bridge was to undergo repairs in late 2009, I actually got off my butt and made a trip to see it before the repairs made it all pretty. I also combed through my photo archives to see what other photos I had of it…
The distinctive web-like pattern of the cables is due to it's hybrid suspension/cable-stay design as well as the fact that the inner set of cables runs along the middle of the bridge rather than next to the outer set of cables as in most modern suspension bridge designs.
The bridge is expected to undergo repairs and repainting in late 2009.
Because the pedestrian walkway is several feet above the vehicular traffic lanes, you almost forget that you're sharing the bridge with vehicles. Central Park uses a similar design with similar effectiveness.
The pointed arches are classic neo-Gothic design elements.
